The War of Art

What is the biggest challenge we all face every day, that is responsible for holding us back from accomplishing anything we really want to do, or have in our lives?? In one word: Fear.

I’m often referred to by friends and family as “fearless”. The funny thing is, nothing could be further from the truth! I face fear every day, just like everyone else. What I do with that fear is what makes me seem fearless.

I’ve learned to let my fear fuel me, rather than hold me back. Am I always successful at doing that? Heck no! But if it is regarding something that is really important to me, there will inevitably come a moment in my inner dialogue where I tell myself to put my big girl pants on, and march in the face of that fear to get to the prize that awaits beyond it.

I’ve deliberately put myself in scary positions just to prove to myself that I can overcome the fear – or in some cases just to get the job done. Whether it was doing stand-up comedy because I was so petrified of doing that, or going out in a huge lightning storm – when I was pathologically scared of thunderstorms – to rescue a mob of horses that had broken out of their pen, or starting up my own business in order to help provide for my family while freeing up my time to be with my son. There was fear at every step in each situation, but what I saw at the end of each tunnel, made it well worth me diving in.

When I was clearing out some bookshelves, I came across a book I’ve read that helped me to see what the fear inside really is – it is our own inner enemy, a form of self-sabotage that often prevents us from achieving what we’re truly capable of. “The War of Art”, by Steven Pressfield, is a fairly quick read, that helped me to recognize that the voice in my head that tells me to be scared, is not always the voice I should be listening to. In the excerpt below, he talks about fear as a form of “Resistance”. Resistance has many forms; self-doubt, procrastination, excuses, drama, etc – everything that gets in your way when you’re taking on a challenge:

“Are you paralyzed with fear? That’s a good sign. Fear is good. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do.  Remember our rule of thumb: The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it. Resistance is experienced as fear; the degree of fear equates to the strength of Resistance. Therefore the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise, the more certain we can be that the enterprise is important to us and to the growth of our soul. That’s why we feel so much Resistance. If it meant nothing to us, there’d be no Resistance.”

One of my son’s favorite books is “Scarface Claw”, by Lynley Dodd. Scarface Claw is the boldest and bravest of cats, and the ONLY thing he is afraid of…. is himself.

Scarface-Looks-Into-The-MirrorSo the next time fear – or any form of Resistance – raises its ugly head within you, recognize it, realize it is holding you back, and act in the face of it. You never know – your wildest dreams may come true!

We have a winner!!

I’m very pleased to announce the winner of the $25 Home Depot giftcard from our curb appeal competition!!!!

Tatia Bailey of B3 Property Group in New Jersey!! She is a Residential Redeveloper like we are, so if you or anyone you know needs to sell a house in the Southern New Jersey area that needs a little TLC, you can contact her on (856) 685-6156.

Tatia’s ideas were: “Red door, I might even change the color. If you must have fence do white. Flowers in front.” And there’s a very good chance that might be exactly what we do with the property! Thanks for the ideas, Tatia! Hope you can put the giftcard to good use.

Thanks to everyone who submitted ideas – especially some of the Photoshop samples that were VERY creative! This was fun – we might have to do it again sometime!

Bathroom renovations without having to sell a kidney…

I recently polled my friends to ask them what they would like to read about in this blog, and one of their ideas was “How to remodel a bathroom without having to sell a kidney!” And so begins this week’s topic!

There’s not much better in the scope of home remodeling than seeing a really nicely done bathroom. It’s a great way to add value to a home, and it certainly IS possible to do without selling a kidney.

One way to keep the costs down is to scour good ole Craigslist or eBay for bathroom items and fixtures. You can score some great deals, especially on antique pedestal sinks, and vanity hardware etc, that someone else might have pulled out of an old house they’re remodeling – possibly even some great tiles that can be recycled. Sure, some things might need some TLC and prep to breathe life into them again before they’re installed into your bathroom, but some items just can’t be bought at the box stores anymore.

Another great place are thrift stores, goodwill stores, and locally here on Central Coast California we have Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore shops, where renovators (such as myself) donate perfectly good items we’ve pulled out of houses we’re remodeling; vanities, sinks, bathtubs, toilets, light fixtures, even kitchen cabinets, kitchen counters, appliances, doors – you name it, you can usually find it there. Often the items are discarded simply because they don’t match the new look we’re aiming for in the house – but they might just be the look you’re after. I imagine there are similar stores in your local area too.

If you’re not into looking for and bringing home used items, then you can usually find really nice looking yet inexpensive items at your local hardware store, or big box hardware store, or of course there is always online.

And although you can often save a good chunk of money by doing all the work yourself, unless you’re an experienced person of the trades, I would recommend hiring someone to do it for you. You can definitely tell when someone has remodeled a bathroom themselves, and they didn’t really know what they were doing – and it kind of defeats the purpose. Plus, when it comes to tiling a shower, for example, you want to make sure all the waterproofing is done correctly otherwise it can lead to all sorts of moisture-related damage issues that are expensive to get fixed.

It’s also amazing how much better a bathroom will look with just a new coat of paint, some new faucets, a new mirror and a new shower curtain – all relatively cheap, and also work that you can do yourself without it looking like you did it yourself.

Update on latest project

So what’s happening with that California bungalow project I told you about so long ago now??

Well, if all goes to plan, we will be closing escrow on the house within the week! The current tenants are scheduled to move out before the end of the month, and then we should be able to start renovations on it in July!!

I am very excited about this particular Pageburn Properties residential redevelopment project for many reasons – most of all, the potential that I see in this property. I’m looking forward to sharing some before and after photos with you, along with updates as we go.

So keep your fingers and toes crossed that everything goes smoothly during close – and throughout the whole project! Watch this space!

More than just rocks

Water conservation is a hot topic here in California right now, and slowly people are starting to cotton on to the “drought tolerant landscaping” concept. I’ve found that whenever the drought comes up in conversation, drought tolerant landscaping is usually discussed as well, and more often than not, I hear “But I don’t want my garden to be just a bunch of rocks…”

Thankfully there is more to drought tolerant landscaping than just rocks. What’s key is finding beautiful plants that grow natively in your area – or an area that is climatically similar – that survive on just the amount of rainfall your area gets. We have gotten hardly any rain here over the past 5 years, so choosing plants that seem to be able to weather drier spells better will also help.

And it doesn’t have to be all dry & scratchy shrubs either. If you’re looking for a lush drought tolerant landscape, check out these landscapes for some ideas!
drought_resistant-formla-idealmow_lawn-native_grasses-dymondia-juncus-hummingbird_sageThe best part about drought tolerant landscaping is that it is usually minimal to maintain as well. Not just the plants themselves, but all the irrigation equipment you don’t have to upkeep and repair after usual wear and tear. Even no-maintenance artificial grass is giving real grass a run for it’s money these days – look at this installation of it – I’m sold!

grass-turf-lawnSo talk to your local nurseryman/woman (from a REAL nursery, not just the clerk at your local big box store who was assigned to the nursery for the day…) to find out which plants are native to your area, and for other beautiful drought tolerant plant ideas. It seriously is a win-win for everyone – what’s stopping you from converting some – or all – of your landscaping to become drought tolerant?
